Programs for Special Needs

MBHTC provides special needs care on a fully inclusive horse ranch.

Located in south Santa Cruz county, we provide respite on a horse ranch with all the fun and activities a ranch provides. Children and adults with special needs ride, learn, play, and interact! Use your SARC (San Andreas Regional Center) Respite hours or private pay.

Our newest program is "Chickens and Such Farm!". Chickens and Such is a small animals farm with chickens, ducks and goats. Lots to learn and do. Come check it out!

Our Programs

Every client has his or her own specialized program designed specifically for their needs and abilities. No one is left out, we pride ourselves on our ability to help all individuals. Below is an overview of general programs for special needs which are customizable for your needs.

Equine Facilitated Learning

EFL is an educational approach that utilizes equine facilatated activities to promote learning and self discovery.

Equine Assisted Behavior Modification

This is an educational approach to replace even the most severe, challenging, negative behaviors with positive, acceptable choices.

Sensory Integration P.E.

Our new sensory gym offers an adaptive climbing wall, tactile panels, climbing net, swings, learning walls, climbing stairs, balance beam, vaulting barrels. All sorts of sensory equipment to enhance your physical and cognitive abilities. Individualized programs - work on skills you need to develop!

Hang with the Horses

An 'on the ranch' and 'out in the community' activity based program providing many different options for your day. Think outside the box! Enjoy the excitement of being involved in a Horse Ranch community. Learn, ride, feed, groom, and hang out on a working horse ranch!

Mechanics Workshop

Are you fascinated with machines, cars, trucks, engines? If yes then this program is for you! Learn the way things work in a hands-on, mechanic shop geared towards individuals with special needs. Discover your inner mechanical engineer!

Pony Club for Special Needs

This program is slower paced than typical Pony Club to allow students with special needs the extra time that is often required for them to learn and develop new skills. The extensive USPC curriculum, developed over the past 55 years, is utilized and customized to your child's learning style. This customization optimizes equine and teamwork skills development.

Quadriplegic Trail Rides

Riders needing total support. Specially trained horses with adaptive equipment enabling riders to build strength, endurance and balance while improving pulmonary, skin, and internal organ function.

Day Camps

All the wonderful activities camp has to offer with a horse theme. Each camper is assigned their own horse to ride, feed, groom, tack-up, learn the mysteries of equines. Assistance provided as needed. Day Camp page

Residential Summer Camp

We offer summer overnight camps for kids and teens that are high functioning but have a special need(s) that typical camps cannot accomodate. Camps run Saturday to Friday starting late June. Residential Camp page

Who we serve

We are a vendor for San Andreas Regional Center (SARC). Regional Center clients (ages 2 throughout adulthood) may use their out-of-home respite hours with us! SARC Vendor #HSO453.

Not a SARC client?

No worries! Your Regional Center can request SARC (San Andreas Regional Center) to become a User Regional Center and your respite hours can be used with us! Private pay also available.

Our Clients

Monterey Bay Horsemanship and Therapeutic Center serves many participants with special needs every day. We specialize in bringing out the full potential of individuals and have an abundant list of past and present success stories demonstrating the effectiveness of our programs to inspire participants and change lives. Below is a partial list of the types of clients we serve on a day to day basis.

Our Facility

Located in south Santa Cruz county within a private, gated, and oceanfront campus. Our Ranch offers miles of trails, private beach, huge covered arena and barn, covered stalls, huge outdoor arena, offices, meeting rooms, tack rooms, bunkhouse, activity rooms, decks, and much more. All in a park-like setting! Licensed and insured. U.S.P.C. Certified Riding Center.

Our Staff

Founded in 1997, our nonprofit 501(c)3 charity's staff and volunteers include specialists and equine professionals. Specialties include Registered Nurse, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Speech Therapist, OT, and PT. Equine professionals include British Horse Society Accreditation, U.S. Pony Club Instructor (D-1 through C-2), Non-Violent Crises Intervention trained.
